401(k), Benefits and Payroll Deductions
Different deductions affect different taxes. Enter annual amounts in the advanced calculator fields.
Traditional 401(k)
Traditional employee 401(k) contributions generally reduce income-taxable wages, but they do not reduce wages subject to Social Security or Medicare. Enter your actual eligible contribution amount.
Qualifying pre-tax benefits
The benefits field assumes qualifying Section 125 deductions that reduce income taxes and FICA, such as eligible cafeteria-plan health premiums. Do not use this field for every deduction called “pre-tax” by your employer.
After-tax deductions
Roth retirement contributions and other after-tax deductions reduce the amount paid to you but do not reduce the tax base in this calculator.
Tax credits
Use the federal credits field only for credits you qualify for. Dependents alone do not establish eligibility. Credits cannot reduce estimated federal income tax below zero; refundable credits are not modeled.
