Get More From Your Breakdown

The tool computes the same $83,500 three different ways — and the location you pick is worth real money. A single NYC resident keeps $60,858; the same salary in Yonkers keeps $63,005; in the rest of New York State, $63,660. The NYC resident tax alone costs about $2,802 a year versus living outside the city.

Custom Breakdown FAQs

How is my custom breakdown calculated?

With the same verified 2026 engine as our homepage calculator: 2026 federal brackets and $16,100 standard deduction (single), 2026 NY State brackets with the official worksheet method, NYC resident tax or the 16.75% Yonkers surcharge where applicable, plus FICA. Nothing is estimated from averages — every line is computed from the actual schedules.

How accurate is this estimate?

Our engine matches official 2026 IRS, NY State, and NYC worksheets to the cent for a single filer with the standard deduction. Real paychecks differ if you have pre-tax deductions (401(k), health insurance), tax credits, or additional income — model those in our full calculator.

Can I share my breakdown with someone?

Yes — after calculating, use the Copy link button. The link re-opens your exact salary and location breakdown for anyone who opens it.

Is my salary data stored anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated instantly in your browser — your salary never leaves your device and nothing is saved or sent to our servers.

Why does my paycheck differ from this estimate?

Three usual suspects: pre-tax deductions (401(k), health premiums, HSA) lower your taxable pay; tax credits or additional income change the total; and filing status — this tool assumes single. Match those inputs in the full calculator and the numbers will line up.

How to Use This Calculator

This tool gives you a complete 2026 take-home breakdown for any salary — not just the round numbers on our fixed salary pages. It runs the exact same verified engine as our homepage calculator, entirely in your browser. Here is how to get an accurate result in under a minute.

Step 1 — Enter your annual salary. Type your gross yearly pay into the “Your annual salary” box at the top of the calculator. Use your pre-tax salary — the number on your offer letter or W-2 Box 1 before any deductions. You can enter any amount, from a part-time $15,000 to an executive $500,000; the engine handles the full 2026 bracket structure including New York’s high-income recapture rules.

Step 2 — Pick your location. Choose one of the three radio options: New York State (anywhere outside NYC and Yonkers), New York City (all five boroughs), or Yonkers (city residents). This choice matters enormously — on a $100,000 salary, an NYC resident keeps about $3,441 less than someone in the rest of the state, purely because of the city resident tax. Yonkers residents pay a 16.75% surcharge on their state tax instead.

Step 3 — Read your breakdown. The calculator instantly shows five tax lines — federal income tax, NY State income tax, NYC or Yonkers local tax, Social Security, and Medicare — plus your total tax, take-home pay, and effective tax rate. Scroll down for the full table with yearly, monthly, and biweekly figures you can compare directly against your pay stubs.

Step 4 — Share or compare. Click Copy link to get a shareable URL that carries your salary and location (for example, ?salary=85000&loc=nyc). Anyone who opens it sees your identical breakdown — perfect for comparing job offers, negotiating raises, or settling debates about NYC vs. upstate take-home pay.

💡 What this calculator assumes

Results are computed for a single filer taking the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 federal, $8,000 NY State) with no pre-tax deductions. If you contribute to a 401(k), pay health premiums pre-tax, or file jointly, your real take-home will be higher — model those scenarios in our full take-home calculator.

Understanding Your 2026 NY Tax Breakdown

Every breakdown this tool produces is built from five separate tax layers. Understanding each one helps you read your results — and spot exactly where your paycheck goes.

1. Federal income tax. The IRS taxes 2026 income at seven marginal rates — 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37% — set by Revenue Procedure 2025-32. For a single filer, the 10% bracket covers the first $12,400 of taxable income, 12% runs to $50,400, 22% to $105,700, 24% to $201,775, 32% to $256,225, 35% to $640,600, and 37% above that. Crucially, these rates apply only to taxable income: a single filer first subtracts the 2026 standard deduction of $16,100, so a $100,000 salary has only $83,900 of federal taxable income. On that amount the federal bill is $13,170 — an effective federal rate of 13.2%, not the 22% marginal bracket most of the income sits in.

2. New York State income tax. New York’s 2026 schedule (Tax Law § 601, as amended by Chapter 59 of the Laws of 2025) runs from 3.9% on the first $8,500 of taxable income up to 10.9% above $25 million. For most earners the relevant single-filer brackets are 3.9% to $8,500, 4.4% to $11,700, 5.15% to $13,900, 5.4% to $80,650, 5.9% to $215,400, and 6.85% above that. New York allows its own standard deduction — $8,000 for single filers — which is smaller than the federal one, so your state taxable income is higher than your federal taxable income. One quirk to know: above $107,650 of NY adjusted gross income, the state recaptures the benefit of its lower brackets through a special worksheet, which is why our engine uses the official computation method rather than a simple bracket lookup.

3. NYC resident tax (or Yonkers surcharge). New York City layers its own income tax on top of the state tax — one of only a handful of U.S. cities to do so. The 2026 NYC rates for single filers are 3.078% to $12,000, 3.762% to $25,000, 3.819% to $50,000, and 3.876% on everything above $50,000. Because the top rate kicks in so early, a middle-class NYC earner pays close to the maximum city rate on most of their income. Yonkers works differently: instead of its own brackets, it charges a 16.75% surcharge on your computed NY State tax. Commuters who work in NYC but live elsewhere owe no city tax — residency, not workplace, triggers it.

4. Social Security tax. FICA takes 6.2% of your wages for Social Security — but only up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500 (SSA). Earn more than that and Social Security withholding stops; the maximum any employee pays in 2026 is $11,439. Your employer matches it dollar for dollar.

5. Medicare tax. Unlike Social Security, the 1.45% Medicare tax has no wage cap — it applies to every dollar you earn. High earners pay an additional 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (joint).

📈 Why marginal ≠ effective

Your marginal rate is the tax on your next dollar (for a $100K NYC single filer, 22% federal + ~5.9% state + 3.876% city + 7.65% FICA ≈ 39.4%). Your effective rate — total tax divided by gross pay — is much lower: 29.1% on that same $100K. Confusing the two is the most common take-home pay mistake we see.

Example Breakdowns: $50K, $100K, and $150K

To show what the calculator does, here are three complete breakdowns for a single NYC resident in 2026, computed with our verified engine — the same numbers the tool produces when you enter these salaries.

Tax line$50,000 salary$100,000 salary$150,000 salary
Federal income tax$3,820.00$13,170.00$24,734.00
NY State income tax$2,103.40$4,860.65$8,291.20
NYC resident tax$1,507.23$3,440.92$5,378.92
Social Security (6.2%)$3,100.00$6,200.00$9,300.00
Medicare (1.45%)$725.00$1,450.00$2,175.00
Total tax$11,255.63$29,121.57$49,879.12
Take-home pay$38,744.37$70,878.43$100,120.88
Effective tax rate22.5%29.1%33.3%
Monthly take-home$3,228.70$5,906.54$8,343.41
Biweekly paycheck$1,490.17$2,726.09$3,850.80

Notice how the effective rate climbs with income: the $50K earner keeps 77.5 cents of every dollar, while the $150K earner keeps 66.7 cents. That progression comes mostly from the federal brackets — but New York’s state recapture above $107,650 of AGI adds its own upward push, which is why the jump from $100K to $150K costs more than a simple bracket lookup would suggest. Try your own salary above and compare it against these benchmarks.

More Custom Breakdown FAQs

Does this calculator handle bonuses and overtime?

Enter your total expected annual pay including bonuses, overtime, and commissions — the engine taxes the full amount using 2026 brackets. Note that a one-time bonus can push part of your income into a higher marginal bracket for that year, and New York’s benefit recapture worksheet applies to your total AGI, so lumpy income is taxed exactly as the official worksheets compute it.

Why is my NYC take-home lower than upstate on the same salary?

The NYC resident tax (3.078%–3.876%) applies on top of state tax. On a $100,000 single salary it costs $3,440.92 a year — roughly $287 per month — versus $0 for someone living outside the five boroughs. Toggle the location radio between “New York City” and “New York State” to see your personal gap.

What is the Yonkers tax and how is it calculated?

Yonkers residents pay a 16.75% surcharge on their computed NY State income tax — not a separate bracket schedule. For example, if your state tax is $4,860.65, the Yonkers surcharge adds about $814. Select “Yonkers” in the calculator and the surcharge is applied automatically.

How do pre-tax deductions like a 401(k) change my result?

Pre-tax contributions reduce the income each tax layer sees. A $6,000 401(k) contribution on a $100,000 salary lowers your federal taxable income to $77,900 and your NY taxable income to $86,000, cutting your total tax by roughly $1,800–$2,000. This quick tool assumes no pre-tax deductions; use our full take-home calculator to model 401(k), HSA, and health premium scenarios precisely.

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

Your marginal rate is the tax on your next dollar of income (about 39.4% combined for a $100K NYC single filer). Your effective rate — total tax divided by gross salary — is 29.1% on that same income, because lower brackets tax your first dollars lightly. The calculator shows both so you can answer “what do I keep?” and “what does a raise cost me?” correctly.

Does the calculator include the 2026 standard deduction?

Yes. Every result subtracts the official 2026 standard deductions — $16,100 federal and $8,000 NY State for single filers (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32; NY Tax Law § 615). That is why a $50,000 salary shows only $33,900 of federal taxable income. If you itemize deductions above these amounts, your actual tax will be slightly lower.

Why does Social Security tax stop at high incomes?

The 6.2% Social Security tax applies only to the first $184,500 of 2026 wages (the SSA taxable maximum). Above that, withholding stops — the most any employee pays is $11,439 for the year. Medicare’s 1.45% has no cap and continues on all earnings, plus 0.9% extra above $200,000 for single filers.

Can I use this for a married couple filing jointly?

This quick tool is calibrated for single filers. Joint filers get wider brackets and a $32,200 federal standard deduction, so their take-home on the same salary is higher — roughly $6,500 more on $100K in NYC. For joint, head-of-household, or separate filing statuses, use our full take-home calculator, which supports all four.

How often are the 2026 figures updated?

The engine encodes the final official 2026 schedules: IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32 (federal brackets and standard deductions), NY Tax Law § 601 as amended by Chapter 59 of the Laws of 2025 (state brackets), NYC Administrative Code § 11-1701 (city rates), and the SSA 2026 wage base. These are the figures your 2026 return — filed in 2027 — will use.

What salary do I need to take home $100,000 in NYC?

Working backwards through the 2026 brackets, a single NYC resident needs a gross salary of roughly $149,800 to keep $100,000 after all taxes. Enter 149800 in the calculator with “New York City” selected to see the exact line-by-line math.
