How Much Does a NYC Teacher Take Home in 2026?

A first-year New York City public school teacher with a bachelor’s degree earns $71,314 on the 2026–27 salary schedule — and keeps $53,416 of it after 2026 taxes, as a single filer living in the five boroughs. That’s $4,451 a month in your pocket, with an effective tax rate of 25.1%.

Those salary numbers come straight from the United Federation of Teachers contract with the city: a five-year deal running September 2022 through November 2027 with raises of 3%, 3%, 3%, 3.25%, and finally 3.5% in September 2026 — the raise reflected in every figure on this page. Start with a master’s degree instead of a bachelor’s, and Step 1A pays $80,166, worth $58,822 after taxes.

Every take-home figure below is computed with the 2026 tax code: the $16,100 federal standard deduction, 2026 New York State brackets, 2026 New York City resident rates, and the $184,500 Social Security wage base. One caveat before we dig in: these figures are before your Teachers’ Retirement System pension contribution, which comes out of your paycheck on top of taxes — we cover exactly how much in section 05.

02 · Steps & lanes

From Step 1A to 8B: How DOE Teacher Pay Works

NYC teacher pay runs on two tracks that move independently: steps reward experience, lanes (called salary differentials) reward education.

You enter the schedule at a step matching your prior teaching experience — most new hires start at Step 1A — and climb one step per satisfactory year of service, up to Step 8B, with the increase landing on your anniversary date or March 1. Your lane depends on your credentials: the bachelor’s lane (C1) starts at $71,314, while the master’s lane (C2+PD) starts at $80,166 — an $8,852 premium for the degree, every single year.

After Step 8B, longevity increments take over: teachers with 5, 10, 13, 15, 18, 20, or 22 years in the system collect extra differentials, from $1,503 at five years up to the top of the entire schedule — $150,236 for Step 8B with 22-year longevity in the highest education lane. That is the ceiling of classroom-teacher pay in New York City under the current contract.

The contract itself was the product of the 2023 UFT agreement: 3% raises in each of the first three years, 3.25% in year four, and 3.5% in year five, plus annual retention payments — $1,000 every May starting in 2026, $1,035 in May 2027, paid in perpetuity. It expires November 28, 2027 — so the 2026–27 schedule on this page is the last full school year of this deal.

03 · Gross vs. take-home

Every Major Step: Gross vs. Take-Home (2026)

Five rungs of the ladder, one consistent math: 2026 federal, New York State, New York City, and FICA taxes for a single filer living in NYC. The jump from Step 1A to Step 8B in the master’s lane is worth $23,298 more gross — and $14,155 more in your pocket.

Notice how the effective rate climbs as you do: the top of the schedule loses a full third to taxes, while a starting teacher keeps nearly three-quarters. That’s progressive taxation doing exactly what it’s designed to do.

$71,314 → $53,416: Full 2026 Tax Breakdown (Single, NYC Resident)

Here is exactly where the $17,898 goes on a starting teacher’s salary — the same five lines you’ll see on every salary breakdown on this site, computed to the cent.

Tax2026 amountDetails
Federal income tax$6,85912% marginal; $55,214 taxable after $16,100 standard deduction
NY State income tax$3,254$63,314 taxable after $8,000 standard deduction
NYC resident income tax$2,3293.078%–3.876% city brackets on top of state tax
Social Security (6.2%)$4,421Full rate — 2026 wage base is $184,500
Medicare (1.45%)$1,034No wage cap; no additional Medicare tax under $200K
Take-home pay$53,416$71,314 − $17,898 total tax · $4,451/month
How the federal $6,859 is computed: $71,314 minus the $16,100 standard deduction leaves $55,214 taxable. The 2026 brackets tax it in slices — 10% on the first $12,400 ($1,240), 12% on the next $38,000 ($4,560), and 22% on the remaining $4,814 ($1,059). Add them up: exactly $6,859. Your marginal rate is 22%, but your federal effective rate is only 9.6% — you never pay your top rate on your whole salary.

The state and city lines work the same progressive way: $63,314 of New York taxable income after the $8,000 state standard deduction, taxed through the state’s 4%–6.85% brackets and then the city’s 3.078%–3.876% brackets. Our New York tax guide walks through every bracket.

05 · The pension piece

Before You Celebrate: TRS Takes Its Cut

Everything above is taxes only. New York City teachers also pay into the Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS) — and unlike Social Security, this one doesn’t stop at 6.2%. Almost every teacher hired after April 1, 2012 is in Tier 6, which takes a sliding percentage of your salary for your entire career.

Tier 6 uses a sliding scale: 3% on the first $45,000, 3.5% from $45,000 to $55,000, 4.5% from $55,000 to $75,000, 5.75% from $75,000 to $100,000, and 6% above $100,000. A much-publicized 2026 state-budget cut to these rates applies to state and city-employee retirement systems — but the state’s own bulletin confirms the Teachers’ Retirement Systems were left out, so NYC teachers keep paying the scale above. On a $71,314 starting salary that’s 4.5% — about $3,209 a year, or $267 a month — on top of the taxes above. A Step 8B teacher at $103,464 pays 6%, roughly $6,208 a year (about $517 a month). And Tier 6’s normal retirement age stays 63 — retire earlier and the benefit is reduced.

The trade-off is real: that pension deduction buys a defined-benefit pension most private-sector workers can only dream of. You can also stash extra in the optional Tax-Deferred Annuity (TDA). For a full tour of what comes out of a New York paycheck beyond taxes, see our benefits and deductions guide.

06 · Honest answer

Is Teaching in NYC Worth It After Taxes?

Here’s the honest math: a starting NYC teacher keeps $53,416 after taxes — a touch below the take-home on a $75,000 NYC salary ($55,667 once you run it), because the schedule starts a few thousand shy of that mark. By Step 8B with a master’s, you’re keeping $72,977 — within striking distance of the $100K take-home of $70,878. And the $150,236 ceiling keeps a clean $100,256.

Against that, weigh the pension haircut above, the cost of a master’s degree the lane system quietly pushes you toward, and New York City rent. The schedule’s real superpower is its predictability: the raises are contractual, the steps are automatic, and unlike most private-sector pay, nobody negotiates you down. Run your household’s real numbers — two-teacher families especially — in the custom breakdown tool before you decide what “enough” looks like.

NYC Teacher Salary FAQs

What is the starting teacher salary in NYC in 2026?

$71,314 — Step 1A in the bachelor’s lane on the 2026–27 UFT salary schedule, which includes the 3.5% raise from September 2026. With a master’s degree, Step 1A pays $80,166.

How much does a NYC teacher take home per month?

A first-year teacher (Step 1A, bachelor’s) keeps $4,451 a month after 2026 federal, state, city, and FICA taxes as a single NYC resident — $53,416 a year. That’s before the TRS pension contribution of about $267 a month (Tier 6 takes 4.5% at this salary).

What is the highest NYC teacher salary?

$150,236 — Step 8B with 22-year longevity in the top education lane, under the 2026–27 schedule. After taxes that’s $100,256 a year, or $8,355 a month.

How do NYC teacher salary steps work?

Steps 1A through 8B reward experience: one step per satisfactory year, up to Step 8B, effective on your anniversary date or March 1. Education lanes (differentials) reward credentials — a master’s is worth about $8,850 extra a year at Step 1A. After 8B, longevity increments at 5, 10, 13, 15, 18, 20, and 22 years keep pay climbing.

Do NYC teachers pay New York City income tax?

Yes, if they live in the city. The NYC resident tax (3.078%–3.876%) applies based on where you live, not where you work — the same rule our NYC taxes guide covers. A teacher commuting from New Jersey or Connecticut owes no NYC tax.

How much of a NYC teacher’s pay goes to the pension?

Tier 6 members (hired after April 1, 2012) pay a sliding 3% to 6% of salary for their whole career: 3% up to $45K, 3.5% to $55K, 4.5% to $75K, 5.75% to $100K, 6% above. (A 2026 state-budget rate cut did not apply to the Teachers’ Retirement Systems.) On the $71,314 starting salary that’s 4.5% — about $267 a month — and it comes out of every paycheck; the figures on this page are before that deduction.

When is the next NYC teacher raise?

The current UFT contract runs through November 28, 2027, and its final scheduled raise — the 3.5% — took effect in September 2026. The next contract negotiation will set raises beyond that.

Are these 2026 figures final?

Yes — salaries are the published 2026–27 UFT/DOE schedule, and taxes use the official 2026 schedules: IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32 (federal brackets, $16,100 standard deduction), 2026 NY State tables, 2026 NYC resident rates, and the $184,500 Social Security wage base. See our methodology page for sources. Reviewed by Daniel Mitchell.

Why is my paycheck smaller than the take-home figures here?

The take-home figures on this page are taxes only. Your actual paycheck also loses the TRS pension contribution (Tier 6: 3% to 6% of salary, about $267 a month on a $71,314 starting salary) plus union dues and any Tax-Deferred Annuity contributions you elected.
