Why Two Paychecks Mean One Big Tax Bill
Each employer withholds as if their paycheck were your only income. They each give you a full standard deduction ($16,100 federal) and fill up the low tax brackets. But the IRS sees your combined $85,000 — and taxes it at higher rates.
| Tax Line | Correct Tax on $85K | Employers Withheld | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federal | $9,870.00 | $5,910.00 | $3,960.00 |
| NY State | $3,993.40 | $3,396.80 | $596.60 |
| NYC | $2,859.52 | $2,447.62 | $411.90 |
| FICA | $6,502.50 | $6,502.50 | $0.00 |
| Total | $23,225.42 | $18,256.92 | $4,968.50 |
Three Ways the System Double-Counts
Is Your Second Job "Taxed More"?
Not exactly. Your second job isn't taxed at a higher rate — it's taxed at your marginal rate. Every extra dollar you earn is taxed at the rate for your total income level.
This is normal — it's how progressive taxes work. The problem isn't the rate, it's the withholding gap.
Fix Your Withholding in 10 Minutes
You have three options for W-4 Step 2 (multiple jobs). Pick one:
Option A: IRS Estimator
Most accurate. Go to irs.gov/W4App, enter both jobs, and it tells you exactly what to put on each W-4.
Most accurateOption B: Worksheet
Use the Multiple Jobs Worksheet on page 3 of Form W-4. Look up your combined income in the table, divide by pay periods, enter in Step 4(c).
Option C: Check the Box
Simplest. Check the box in Step 2 on both W-4s. This tells each employer to withhold at higher single rates. Works best when jobs pay similarly. Note: the checkbox only works when the household has exactly two jobs total — with three or more jobs, use the worksheet or the estimator.
SimplestDon't Forget New York's Form
Federal W-4 isn't enough. New York has its own form: IT-2104. You need one per employer.
- Claim full allowances on your highest-paying job only
- Claim zero allowances on the second job
- If income under $107,650: use the reduce-by-7 rule from IT-2104 instructions
- Need extra withheld? Enter a dollar amount on line 6 (state) — about $23/week covers the $596 state gap
- NYC extra: about $16/week covers the $412 city gap
New for 2026: Overtime Cap Combines
Under OBBBA, you can deduct up to $12,500 in overtime pay (single filer). But if you work overtime at both jobs, the cap combines — it's $12,500 total, not per job.
Starting 2026, overtime is reported in W-2 Box 12, Code TT. Add both W-2s together. If combined overtime exceeds $12,500, you can only deduct $12,500.
The $1,000 Rule
If you owe more than $1,000 at tax time and paid less than 90% of your total tax during the year, the IRS charges an underpayment penalty (plus interest).
On a $4,969 gap, that's a real risk. Fix your W-4 now, or make quarterly estimated payments (Form 1040-ES for federal, IT-2105 for NY).
Common Questions
How much tax is taken from a second job in NYC?
Your second job is taxed at your marginal rate. On $60K + $25K in NYC (single, 2026), you keep about 64¢ per $1 of the second job. The rest goes to federal (22%), NY State (~6%), NYC (~3.4%), and FICA (7.65%).
Why do I owe so much with two jobs?
Each employer withholds as if their paycheck were your only income — giving you a full standard deduction and filling low brackets twice. Combined, you owe $4,969 more on $60K + $25K because the IRS taxes your total $85K at higher rates.
How do I fill out W-4 with two jobs?
Use Step 2. Easiest: check the box on both W-4s. Most accurate: use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator at irs.gov/W4App. Or complete the Multiple Jobs Worksheet and enter the result in Step 4(c).
Do I need a separate IT-2104 for each job in NY?
Yes. File IT-2104 with each NY employer. Claim full allowances on the highest-paying job, zero on the other. Add extra withholding on line 6 if needed.
How much extra should I withhold per paycheck?
On $60K + $25K, divide the $4,969 gap by 26 biweekly paychecks = $191 per paycheck. Enter this in W-4 Step 4(c).
Is overtime from two jobs combined for the $12,500 deduction?
Yes. The 2026 OBBBA overtime deduction ($12,500 single) is a total cap across all jobs. Add Box 12 Code TT from both W-2s.
Will I get penalized for under-withholding?
If you owe over $1,000 and paid less than 90% during the year, yes — plus interest. Use the safe harbor: pay 100% of last year's tax (110% if AGI > $150K).
Does NYC tax apply to both jobs?
Yes, if you're an NYC resident. NYC tax (3.078%–3.876%) applies to your combined income regardless of which job it comes from.
Should I adjust withholding or make estimated payments?
Adjusting W-4 is simpler and automatic. Estimated payments (1040-ES / IT-2105) work too but require discipline to pay quarterly.
What if my second job is freelance/1099?
Then no withholding at all — you owe the full amount plus 15.3% self-employment tax (on top of income tax). Make quarterly estimated payments. See our freelancer guide.
My spouse works too — is that the same problem?
Yes, identical mechanics. W-4 Step 2 is titled “multiple jobs or spouse works” for exactly this reason: a dual-income household gets two standard deductions and two sets of low brackets, one per employer. Either spouse can complete Step 2 — the IRS recommends doing Steps 3 and 4 on the highest-paying job’s W-4 only and leaving them blank on the other.
I already owe for last year. What do I do now?
First, file on time and pay what you can — the IRS charges a 0.5% failure-to-pay penalty every month plus daily compounding interest on unpaid balances, so the bill grows while you wait. If you cannot pay in full, set up an IRS payment plan (and New York’s, if applicable). Then fix next year: submit corrected W-4s with Step 2 completed and extra withholding in Step 4(c), or start quarterly estimated payments — so you do not repeat the cycle.
